When Redwall was published in 1987 it catipulted author Brian Jacques to international stardom. And small wonder! This enthralling tale is jam-packed with the things we long for in a great adventure: danger, laughter, hairbreath excapes, tragedy, mystery, a touch of wonder, a truly despicable villain, and a hero we can take to heart.

That hero is Matthias, a young mouse who must rise above his fears and failures to save his friends at Redwall Abbey. The villain is Cluny the Scourage, one of the most deliciously despicable rats of all time. The unforgettable cast of supporting characters includes the stalwart badger Constance, an irrepressible hare named Basil Stag Hare, and the elderly wisemouse Brother Methuselah.

But most of all there is Matthias, seeking his true destiny in a journey that will lead through danger and despair to true wisdom.

Matthias starts out as an adorable pup of a mouse and ends up a good and formidable young adult mouse. He is the protagonist and you can't help but adore him, together with Constance the Badger and the old Methuselah mouse... The second favorite of mine, Silent Sam, is plain cute, and the Sparrow and Rabbit are great supporting characters! But the star of the show is definitely the writing style and the enchanted atmosphere of this world. The descriptions are brisk but just enough to give you a feel of the forest and its inhabitants, while the banter is plentiful and lively. The whole book reads very smoothly and there is no chance of you getting lost along the way. I loved all the different characters, and really enjoyed the old-school valiant hero and terrible villain. I also liked that the author didn't shy away from death and pain. Actions have consequences and kids, who often believe themselves invulnerable, eventually have to deal with the changes that come from the passing of someone, and that life changes, but keeps on going... 5/5 star :)

Like 70% of the books I read, it was recommended for me. well, it's a great fun. Matthias is a young orphan mouse living in the Redwall abbey. Mouse from Redwall are peaceful mouse, and it's the unwritten rule they basically have the privileges of passing through anywhere. One day, Cluny the Scourage has came. Cluny is a legendary mouse, just a villain really. He came to take over the Redwall, which can only be saved by a brave warrior. However, none of the Redwall mouse are warriors-they are healers! Matthias is the only warrior mouse among them. With the help of a badger Constance, the squirrel family, a hare with large appetite Basil Stag Hare, the wise old Brother Metuselah, and the legendary warrior Martin, Mattias's adventure begins. I am in the middle of reading this book, and let me tell you. There are no parts that are boring you just flip the pages away! And the foods they eat...wow. Don't be fooled by how it's such an old story and the cover! my 2nd best read. :)

Redwall is a MENSA reading list book that I've been wanting to read for a while. This book is filled with adventure, suspense, and action! If you enjoy fantasy books, then this is a must read. My favorite part of Redwall would be when Jess the squirrel and Basil Stag Hare take back the tapestry of Martin the Warrior from Cluny and his harmful horde. Are you wondering who are these characters and why is the tapestry being fought over? Then you must read this book!

I read this book cover to cover in the 5th grade, and couldn't stop reading the series. I just bought this for my 8 year old. I hope she loves it as much as I did.
