Joey is a boy that went to stay at his Grandma Dowdel's house every summer with his little sister Mary Alice. They did not want to go to their grandma’s house and wanted to stay home in Chicago. They thought it would be boring and no fun. But that quickly changed after a couple of visits with her and soon they were looking forward to the visits. The visits were fun and like no other! Grandma is not the kind of grandma you think. Right here mention some crazy things that happen during the summer Then after many years of going to grandma’s the kids were getting old and turning to young adults but they will never forget the time when they broke the law with grandma and the time when Joey got to fly. They won't forget these times because it was these times that made their childhood and made them who they are. My Opinion The book that I will be writing my opinion on is A Long Way From Chicago written by Richard Peck. I loved this book, It is an awesome book. I loved everything about this book the way it was written and the characters were both perfect. I loved the whole book but one of my favorite parts was when grandma cried a little when she looked at her grandkids in the clothes from her wedding. This part was special because you start to think that even though grandma can break the law and blackmail people she still has a soft and loving side. The funniest part in the book to me was when Grandma put the dead mouse in the milk. This was funny because you know that Grandma is the only person in the book that would do anything like that. When you read this book you always think about what grandma is going to do next. Out of 5 stars I would give this book 5 out of 5. I would recommend this book to anyone, a child or an adult because this book is a one of a kind.Over 4 years agozuprialiked a comment in Long Way From Chicago: Novel-Ties Study Guide.
I rate this book a 4 star because it was a very interesting book and got me hooked in at the start. The book tells the story of Joey and his sister Mary Alice, city children from Chicago who visit their Grandma Dowdel in her sleepy, rural town during eight summers between 1929 to 1942, the years of the Great Depression. Grandma Dowdel is an unusual woman with much energy and a seize-the-day attitude, and Joey and Mary Alice have several unexpected adventures with her. The book is written in “novel in stories” style, also called short story cycle, in which a collection of short stories is presented in a way that makes reading the whole more enhanced than reading each individual part. The connection I made is that I almost every summer I go to my grandma's house at least twice a week.Over 4 years agozuprialiked a comment in Long Way From Chicago: Novel-Ties Study Guide.
Marie Alice and Joey go to their grandma’s house every summer. They lived in Chicago and would ride the train every summer to grandma’s house. Some summer they didn’t want to go. But then they loved all of the adventures they had there. One summer Grandma , Marie Alice and Joey went fishing and used a fish cage which is illegal. There were also some police there but they were drunk. After that they caught Grandma and she escaped. The last summer they were there, there was a talent show and Anne Marie was in it and was wearing Grandma’s wedding dress and won the talent show. That was the last time Joe was there. Where did Joe go? The novel we read was called A Long Way From Chicago. My opinion of the novel is that it is a good book. I think this because there were a lot of different adventures and many where grandma breaks the laws. My least favorite part of the book was when it ended. Now Joe isn’t going to come back for a while or he will never come back. I would rate this book a 4 out of 5 star. I rated it this because some of the book was a little boring. I would recommend this novel. I think people would like it because some people like the same kind of books as me. That is my opinion over A Long Way From Chicago. I reached out to some other classmates and they said that The book was a pretty good book but the chapters were a little long. Another friend said it was too hard to follow along. Some authors say the book is very good and they enjoy reading Richard Peck's books.Over 4 years agozupria has read this book.
