If you happened to be in San Diego, California from Thursday July 12th to Sunday July 15th, you would have encountered a rather strange sight - Thousands of adults strolling all over town dressed in the wackiest costumes that ranged from popular comic book characters to science fiction heroes to something, they had just put together - Welcome to Comic Con International, a convention which allows adults to act like children again.
Started 42 years ago, by comic enthusiast Shel Dorf, as a place to showcase comic books, science fiction and film/television, the event has now grown to include a larger genre of elements like horror, anime, video games, animation and even, toys.
The four-day convention which attracts over 125,000 people from all over the world has also become the venue for companies to introduce exciting new media products and give their most die-hard fans a glimpse of upcoming comic books, movies and video games.
This year was no exception. Twilight fans were treated to a special screening of the first seven minutes of the upcoming Breaking Dawn Part 2 and given the opportunity to interact with the movie's leading stars Kristin Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, as well as, many others. In addition to that they also got a sneak peak of the movie adaptation of The Host, also written by Twilight series author, Stephanie Meyer.
Also unveiled for the first time was the new all-gold Iron Man suit, Robert Downey Jr. will be sporting in the third sequel of the blockbuster movie series. While this is major shift from the customary red and gold suit that we have all become accustomed to, it was the new Superman suit that had fans buzzing - In lieu of the traditional red and blue latex, the superhero will now be flying around in a grey and red suit purportedly crafted from Kryptonite (the fictional ore form of material that can be found on Superman's island Krypton) - As to how Clark Kent will change into this unwieldy looking costume inside a pay-phone booth is something, we shall all have to wait and see.
Video game enthusiasts weren't disappointed either - Capitalizing off the success of the recent blockbuster, The Amazing Spiderman, Activision announced a new game featuring the superhero. Also unveiled for 2013, was the arrival of antihero Deadpool (Wade Wilson) to game consoles. Already a fixture in Activision's X-Men: Ultimate Alliance Games, Capcorn's Marvel vs. Capcorn 3 and Activision’s Spider-Man: Shattered Dimension, the mutant with healing powers and a good sense of humor will now get to star in his very own game - And maybe even the big screen, sometime in the near future.
While all these and other exciting panels, presentations, endless displays of collectible toys, comics and film memorabilia are fun, the reason fans return to the event year after year, is to make new like-minded friends, mingle with old ones and most important of all, forget just for a few days, that they are adults!
