Newbery Honor author Rodman Philbrick presents a gripping yet poignant novel about a 12-year-old boy and his dog who become trapped in New Orleans during the horrors of Hurricane Katrina.

Zane Dupree is a charismatic 12-year-old boy of mixed race visiting a relative in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hits. Unexpectedly separated from all family, Zane and his dog experience the terror of Katrina's wind, rain, and horrific flooding. Facing death, they are rescued from an attic air vent by a kind, elderly musician and a scrappy young girl--both African American. The chaos that ensues as storm water drowns the city, shelter and food vanish, and police contribute to a dangerous, frightening atmosphere, creates a page-turning tale that completely engrosses the reader. Based on the facts of the worst hurricane disaster in U.S. history, Philbrick includes the lawlessness and lack of government support during the disaster as well as the generosity and courage of those who risked their lives and safety to help others. Here is an unforgettable novel of heroism in the face of truly challenging circumstances.

This book is very adventurous and has a lot of action, but it can be a little scary at times. I would not recommend it to anyone younger than 4th grade. If you like action and a little bit tragic books, though, you will probably enjoy it.

I find the book okay, because I thought that Zane's father and Malvina's mother made the book a lot sadder, which I didn't like.

I love the book

I completly agree with Mrs. Jagielski's comment on the book. A very emotional book. I cried a few times, like when he jumped out of the car to get Bandit, when the flood started, when Bandit almost died of heatstroke, and when Bandit got shot. But it is still an awesome book and i think that everyone should read it. BTW I love dogs thats why I cried a lot for Bandit :'(

Zane and the Hurricane is a powerful story about one boy's experience of Hurricane Katrina and the friends he makes as he struggles to survive.

This book is a really good book because it explains how Zane survived Hurricane Katrina. A really strong hurricane. Read the book to find out what happened to Zane after and before he survived it!

This book takes place in New Orleans and narrates Zane's story and his trials after surviving Katrina Hurricaine.
