This irresistible first novel tells the story of a quiet boy who embarks on a dangerous quest in order to fulfill his destiny -- and find his father -- in a strange world beneath New York City.

When Gregor falls through a grate in the laundry room of his apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland, where spiders, rats, cockroaches coexist uneasily with humans. This world is on the brink of war, and Gregor's arrival is no accident. A prophecy foretells that Gregor has a role to play in the Underland's uncertain future. Gregor wants no part of it -- until he realizes it's the only way to solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. Reluctantly, Gregor embarks on a dangerous adventure that will change both him and the Underland forever.

This is the best book EVER!!! I just can't believe Henry betrayed them. And I also can't believe Gregor did'nt get a sword. Because all through the quest he was the only one without a weppon. My favorite charector is ripred. But why would he want to be king of a bloodthirsty army of rats? It's just weird. But still he's cool. But I did'nt think Are and Gregor were really... well how do I say this... they did'nt have the same personality. I mean Are was a trouble maker and Gregor did'nt even like to fight! But they still work well together in the other books. For me the book was a short book because I read HUGE books. But it's action packed. And I would give the book a 5 out of 5 star rating. :)

awesome book mannnnnnnn!!!

This book is great. It's set in summertime. Gregor's stuck in his family's apartment, babysitting his younger sister, Margaret (Boots). When he has to do the laundry, he takes her with him to the laundry room. As he does the laundry, Boots disappears down a grate to a world under New York City. Gregor follows, and they fall down to the Underland with giant rats, bats big enough to ride on, and strange, pale, violet-eyed people. As strange as all this is, what's even stranger is that they're calling him the warrior, the Overlander foretold to save the Underland. You should read this, whoever you are.

Such an awesome adventure! Always exciting, good actions, and strong feelings to from Gregor.

one of the best books i have ever read, has every must have, action, mystery, sarcasm, no kidding

Like the Hunger Games, Suzanne demonstrates remarkable writing skills. Readers will easily adapt to the challenges Gregor faces, then shriek with joy or dismay depending. Each character is described with such detail that the reader dives into the plot, then doesn't resurface until the very ending!!!!

This is the story of a boy who falls into an underground land to find out that he is part of this world's prophecy. There are humans down there, along with talking bats and cockroaches. There are five books in the series, written by the same author as The Hunger Games, but for younger kids in mind.
