A 2015 Newbery Honor Book Going to school and making new friends can be tough. But going to school and making new friends while wearing a bulky hearing aid strapped to your chest? That requires superpowers! In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, author/illustrator Cece Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with the Phonic Ear, a very powerful—and very awkward—hearing aid.
The Phonic Ear gives Cece the ability to hear—sometimes things she shouldn’t—but also isolates her from her classmates. She really just wants to fit in and find a true friend, someone who appreciates her as she is. After some trouble, she is finally able to harness the power of the Phonic Ear and become “El Deafo, Listener for All.” And more importantly, declare a place for herself in the world and find the friend she’s longed for.

i loved reading the book
awesome!!!!!!!!!
This book is definitely a favorite of mine. I have read this many times. The author Cece Bell wrote about her real childhood. Cece was a normal kid before she got diagnosed with meningitis. Meningitis is a disease when the brain swells. She has to stay in the hospital for days. She was sometimes lonely but she got plenty of presents. When she gets out of the hospital, she finds that she can't hear. Throughout the book, there are many exciting and happy moments for Cece, but there are also times when Cece feels sad or angry. At school, people make fun of her and she was usually very lonely. I would recommend this book to people who want to learn more about Cece and people who like reading short graphic novels. I personally really enjoyed this book and couldn't stop reading it.
this was a really great book
this book is about a girl named cece who is not able to hear and must endure teaseing.
I read this book for school and I loved it. It it about a girl named Cece who after being sick, is left deaf. In this book Cece has to go through many more obstacles that not being able to hear, boys, friends, and of course school.
This book is a comic book, yet at the same time a biography. I enjoy the double genre and the inspiring story seen inside. It is so exciting, it is hard to not spoil the book!
I love this book, it starts out as a little sweet girl, the poor thing gets meningitis and the doctor says her brain might swell she turns out to be O.K. but doesn't have very good hearing. she starts a new school, she thought she would be the only one with hearing aids, but to her astonishment everyone else is just like her! After a while Cece has to say good bye to her best friend, Emma. she starts another new school and it turns out she is the only on with hearing aids, she gets a new huge hearing aid called the phonic aid that makes it so she can hear the teacher wherever she is in the building! She hears of a boy who called another deaf boy deafo on a TV show, and thats how she got the name EL Deafo. Follow Cece or should I say El Deafo through her troubles, with school and friendship. This wonderful book is also an autobiography.
I think the person Cece saw on Tv that got called Deafo was a girl, not a boy.
BEST BOOK EVERRR! This book is amazing and definitely a quick read! IT WAS AWESOME!
