A Newbery Honor Book.

Sasha Zaichik has known the laws of the Soviet Young Pioneers since the age of six:
The Young Pioneer is devoted to Comrade Stalin, the Communist Party, and Communism.
A Young Pioneer is a reliable comrade and always acts according to conscience.
A Young Pioneer has a right to criticize shortcomings.
But now that it is finally time to join the Young Pioneers, the day Sasha has awaited for so long, everything seems to go awry. He breaks a classmate's glasses with a snowball. He accidentally damages a bust of Stalin in the school hallway. And worst of all, his father, the best Communist he knows, was arrested just last night.

This moving story of a ten-year-old boy's world shattering is masterful in its simplicity, powerful in its message, and heartbreaking in its plausibility.

I think this book was great! It shows you how children in the soviet union were treated. It also has a great plot but the ending is very unsatisfying

I give this 4 and a half stars C:

I think breaking stalin's nose is very serious! But is still school appropriate for school. It can get very action packed so be ready. But the ending is very unsuspecting tho! But the books bad guy is very sinister his name is Stukavoch watch out for him! Thank you for reading :)

I like the way that most things went in this book. A young boy from the soviet union must choose between his country or his father. I liked this book, but not the ending.

This was an awesome book!I just finished it!It was really exciting!

i like the book because i love history

I liked this book but I think Sasha gets in a big mess. I feel bad for Sasha. This book is a awesome.

I didn't like the ending.Hes just sitting there eating a baked potato. Unless there's another book im not satisfied.Other than that the book is good.

Wow...left there for Zaichik was horrible. This makes me feel bad because we live a country with many opportunities and look at him. in the end of the book i hope he survives.

This book is fantastic. I read it in 3rd grade(I am a 5th grader now) and I still remember what a powerful effect it had on me. This book taught me about how kids your age and my age were being educated during Stalin's reign..
